Portrait Tips

Great portraits don’t just happen. They are the result of thoughtful effort on both sides of the camera. Your portraits will reflect the amount of consideration you put into them. The more we both plan in advance of your session, and spend time getting to know each other, the more happy you will be with your finished portraits.

Your portrait session is not really just about you. You do want to look your best, but the end result is for those closest to you – your family and friends. They are the ones who see and love you, and know you only through their eyes. So the more you relax and let YOU show through to us as we take your portraits, the more they will see and appreciate the real, relaxed you.

Below are some documents that will guide you in getting ready for your portrait session.  Click on the document name to open them in a new browser window or tab, and to view or print them.

Selecting the Proper Size Image for Display

One of the things you’ll need to consider when you come to the studio for your purchasing session is how large your images will need to be. If you are going to put them in an album, this is an easy decision – just select what size you think will look good – it is purely a matter of personal taste.

However, if your images are going to be framed to be placed on a table, your mantle, or one of your walls, you need to consider how far away the viewer will be from the photos, as well as the aesthetics of the room you are placing the images in. For instance, an 11×14 will almost certainly be dwarfed and look tiny if placed on the wall over your sofa, but that same 11×14 will seem overpowering placed on an end table. We can help with this size selection process and as well help you with whether a framed print will look good or if a canvas wrap will be more appropriate.

One of the services we provide is to come to your home before (or if necessary, after) your portrait session, and take a photo of the area where you will be displaying your images (alternatively, you can take this photo yourself and bring it to us). If taken prior to your session, as we pose and form the images in the studio, we can keep the display criteria in mind. Then, during the purchasing session, we can show you how your images will actually look superimposed on the image of your home. This is a free service we provide because we believe it results in your greatest satisfaction with the finished images.
